title: Burton takes rehab assignment to Triple-A
content: CINCINNATI -- The trades started to flow around baseball the past couple of days, and a few Reds players have grown curious about whether or not their team will make an addition. The Reds, who traded outfielder Jonny Gomes to the Nationals for two Minor Leaguers on Tuesday, have yet to add a player leading up to Sunday's non-waiver Trade Deadline. It's getting harder to gauge if a move will happen as Cincinnati entered Thursday in fourth place in the National League Central with a 50-54 record and 5 1/2 games out of first place.  Players remained hopeful, however, that a deal could still be made."I feel like we have great players on the team, but right now, we're just not getting it done," second baseman Brandon Phillips said. "We have some of the best talent in baseball on one team, but as a team, we're not putting things together. We have to do something to change up the attitude. It can be something small. I love my teammates to death, but we all want to win."A source told MLB.com that the Reds have balked at the Rockies' high asking price for ace starter Ubaldo Jimenez, which included pitchers Travis Wood and Homer Bailey and either lefty Aroldis Chapman or catching prospect Devin Mesoraco. The belief is the Reds have moved on to Rays starter James Shields, who endured a rocky start Wednesday night -- allowing 10 earned runs on 12 hits in four innings to take a loss against the Athletics. Reds general manager Walt Jocketty is still a buyer on the market looking to add talent."I'm sure they're trying. He's one of the best," closer Francisco Cordero said of Jocketty. "I know the job he did with St. Louis, and he put our team together last year that won the division. He's looking for some help, and it won't surprise me between now and Sunday if we make a move and we get people to help the team compete and play better. We're not playing good right now."Reds manager Dusty Baker is looped in on trade proposals but hasn't noticed the pace picking up yet."I hear about it. They ask my opinion on things," Baker said. "I don't have the final say so, but I'm one of the guys that are in on the discussions."Cordero realizes it can be an unsettling period for a clubhouse approaching the Deadline -- because to bring in talent, it means teammates will likely depart. "Nobody knew Jonny would go, and he got traded. You have to understand this is business, and you have to be ready for it whenever the time comes," Cordero said. "It's hard to see people go, people you've played with. At the same time, it's going to happen."

Burton takes rehab assignment to Triple-A                CINCINNATI -- The rehab assignment of reliever Jared Burton will move to Triple-A Louisville on Friday, when he is scheduled to throw two innings. He has not pitched in the big leagues all season since having right shoulder surgery.Burton has thrown three games with the organization's Arizona Summer League team, totaling four innings. His last outing was two innings on Monday."It's been great," Burton said. "It feels as good as I've felt my whole career. It's so much more free and easy. I'm not getting sore after my outings, which had never been the case. My velocity is coming along pretty good. I was 91-94 mph in my third outing. It's only going to get better with arm strength."Burton has spent the past month throwing at the club's player development complex in the desert of Goodyear, Ariz. He worked out and threw at Great American Ball Park on Thursday.

Worth noting                Right fielder Jay Bruce was dropped from fifth to sixth in the batting order on Thursday vs. the Mets against lefty starter Chris Capuano. Bruce came in hitting .240 vs. left-handers and .273 against right-handers."Left-handers have been giving him the blues lately," manager Dusty Baker said. "He was hitting them great earlier in the year. Lately, they're working him over pretty good."Richie Ashburn official jersey, authentic Richie Ashburn jersey Cream, authentic Richie Ashburn jersey White,Robin Roberts official jersey, authentic Robin Roberts jersey White,Roy Halladay official jersey, authentic Roy Halladay jersey Grey, authentic Roy Halladay jersey Cream, authentic Roy Halladay jersey Black, replica Roy Halladay jersey Blue, mlb jersey,

title: Hochevar gets consecutive wins for second time
content: BOSTON -- Eric Hosmer added another first to his memory book Wednesday night when he belted a three-run home run over Fenway Park's Green Monster."It's in somebody's apartment or taxicab out there," manager Ned Yost said.Hosmer has now gone deep in two historic ballparks -- Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium on May 11, when he homered for the first time in his big league career. His homer in Boston was a shot that gave the Royals a three-run lead in the first before the Red Sox rolled to a 12-5 win on Wednesday night."That was pretty cool," he said. "The Yankee Stadium [homer] was a little better, though, because that was my first one. But they're both pretty sweet."The left-handed-hitting first baseman got his fourth four-RBI game, most on the club. In his first 71 games, he's knocked in 45 runs, which among American League rookies put him behind only the Angels' Mark Trumbo, who has 48 RBIs but has played in 25 more games."When you hit in the middle of the lineup, that's your job, to drive in runs," Hosmer said. "One thing that [Yost] and [Jeff Francoeur] and the older guys have been telling me is just worry about driving in runs and the rest of the numbers will be there. But the main stat to look at it is runs batted in."Hosmer is currently batting fourth after hitting third 34 times."It's a credit to the lineup, guys getting on in front of me and I'm coming up a lot with guys on first and second, or second and third a lot, and that's helped," he said. "[Alex Gordon] and Melky [Cabrera] and those guys have been setting the table for me."Hosmer went into Thursday's game with an eight-game streak (17-for-35, .486) in which he had eight RBIs."What's impressive to me is that it's not only production, it's clutch production," Yost said. "You go back and look at some of the numbers that he's put forth in terms of tying games up and putting us ahead, it's clutch production. But that's just what I expected from him."On July 15 in Minneapolis, Hosmer pounded a two-out, ninth-inning home run to beat the Twins, 2-1.  Of his 10 homers through Wednesday, six either tied the game or put the Royals ahead. His 15 go-ahead RBIs and nine game-winning RBIs are the most on the club."He's going to be a special player, he's going to be an elite player in the league. There's no way around that," Yost said.

Hochevar gets consecutive wins for second time                BOSTON -- With the Royals posting a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox on Thursday, Luke Hochevar has won back-to-back starts for just the second time this season.Prior to Thursday, the only other time the righty won consecutive starts was April 10 and 15 against the Tigers and Mariners.Hochevar also pitched quite well on July 15 against the Twins, giving up just one run in seven innings, but he received a no-decision in Kansas City's 2-1 win."I feel that since the All-Star break it's been more [of] my focus to make one quality pitch at a time," said Hochevar. "Before the break, things were getting complicated and I just got back to being simple and executing one pitch at a time."His seven innings marked the 10th time in 22 starts this season that he'd pitched at least that many.

Cabrera gets breather in series finale vs. Boston                BOSTON -- Center fielder Melky Cabrera, despite impressive numbers against Red Sox starter Josh Beckett, was out of Thursday's starting lineup."His numbers are fine. I just had a chance to give him a day off. He hasn't had one for a while," manager Ned Yost said. "He's been going hard, [and it's] just a good chance to give him a day."Cabrera, who faced Beckett often while with the Yankees, is 12-for-39 (.308), against him. Mitch Maier, who replaced Cabrera in the starting lineup, also had success against the right-hander -- 4-for-9 (.444).The last time Cabrera didn't start a game was June 25. He played in all but three of the Royals' previous 104 games. He's had a good July, batting .367 (36-for-98), which is the ninth-best mark in the Majors.authentic Pete Rose jersey Green, authentic Pete Rose jersey White,Placido Polanco official jersey, authentic Placido Polanco jersey Grey, authentic Placido Polanco jersey Cream, authentic Placido Polanco jersey White,Raul Ibanez official jersey, authentic Raul Ibanez jersey Grey, authentic Raul Ibanez jersey Cream, authentic Raul Ibanez jersey White, mlb jersey,

title: Kershaw on quest for magic No. 20
content: LOS ANGELES -- To Clayton Kershaw, 20 wins is just a number.Sure, it's a historic, relevant and important number in baseball circles and in the legacy of big league pitchers. But until the offseason -- once he's reached the week of reflection time he allows himself after the season ends -- it'll be like any other number.Except of course, 13, which is the most important number in Kershaw's world right now as he sits on 12 wins, preparing for his next start on Monday."You start looking ahead, you get in trouble," Kershaw said. "The next start's against the Padres. That's what I worry about. That's all I can worry about."The 23-year-old lefty is coming off a July that thrust him directly into the conversation for the National League Cy Young Award. He won four games without allowing a run in three of them. If he were to win four in each of the season's remaining two months, that would put him squarely at 20.He would be the first Dodgers pitcher to win 20 since Ramon Martinez did so in 1990, and the first Dodgers lefty to do so since '86. The man who did it then, Fernando Valenzuela, was honored with a bobblehead during Kershaw's most recent victory Tuesday."That magic number is 20 for any pitcher," said Valenzuela, who noted wins were always his favorite stat because they were the most team-oriented. "It's the number that any pitcher is looking for. He's been doing a good job, he's got marvelous stuff."At this point, Kershaw reaching 20 wins is an outside shot, given the number of factors -- run support, bullpen help and pitching matchups -- that can affect a final win total. Even Kershaw said that final total is something he can't really control. But it would certainly put him in good company. He'd be the 12th Los Angeles Dodger to achieve the mark, among names like Koufax, Drysdale, Sutton and Hershiser. There was a time a Dodgers 20-game winner seemed like an annual occurrence. From 1962 to '77, eight pitchers combined to reach the mark 12 times. To pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, if anyone has the chance to snap the current drought, which now exceeds two decades, it's Kershaw. He pointed to Kershaw's ability to work deep into ballgames -- he's second in the league in innings pitched. He'll be in the game later, in case the game is decided later, and his fate will be more in his own hands and less in those of the bullpen."It takes a special guy to be able to win 20 games," Honeycutt said. "He's given himself a chance to win every time he goes out there pretty much."Honeycutt's seen progress this season, pointing to Kershaw's work ethic and preparation as a key reason he could threaten the mark again in the future, too."We're seeing a guy throw at an extremely high level," Honeycutt said. "His name should be mentioned among the best pitchers in baseball right now. And for me, what's exciting is he's continuing to get better."Kershaw has found a groove throwing to catcher Dioner Navarro recently. Navarro was understandably giddy at the prospect of catching a pitcher chasing the 20-win mark.Navarro said he expects Kershaw to get there. And not because of eight-inning, three-hit shutouts like the one he tossed two starts ago in San Francisco. More so because of starts like Tuesday's in which Kershaw didn't have his best stuff, allowed eight hits and was consistently behind in counts. Still, Kershaw lasted into the seventh, gave up just two runs and remained in line for the win.As reporters crowded around his locker, Kershaw responded to questions about what was missing. He talked about how tough of a battle it was to work without his best stuff. That Kershaw could discuss his lack of stuff with a victorious grin on his face is the reason Navarro expects him to reach 20 wins: Even when he's not at his best, he gets the results."We're so used to him going eight, nine innings, we get spoiled," Navarro said. "Everybody expects him to go nine with a shutout. But 6 2/3 innings with two runs is a pretty good job."Manager Don Mattingly said Kershaw is certainly capable, but needs things to fall into place just so. Either way, Kershaw has his vote for the Cy Young Award. It's a simple argument, he says."It's about the best pitcher in baseball, right?" Mattingly said. "It's hard to find one better."authentic Jimmy Rollins jersey Cream, authentic Jimmy Rollins jersey White,John Kruk official jersey, authentic John Kruk jersey Grey,Mike Schmidt official jersey, authentic Mike Schmidt jersey Green, authentic Mike Schmidt jersey Blue, authentic Mike Schmidt jersey White,Mitch Williams official jersey, authentic Mitch Williams jersey Grey,Pete Rose official jersey, mlb jersey,

title: Fascinating facts from Wednesday's games
content: On July 1, 1861 -- exactly two years before the Battle of Gettysburg began -- John Gibson Clarkson was born in Cambridge, Mass. Clarkson would make his big league debut for the Worcester Ruby Legs in the National League on May 2, '82, and would go on to win 328 games in the NL over a 12-year career. Clarkson would lead the league in wins and strikeouts in three different seasons, including '85, when he won a career high 53 and struck out a near-career best 308.On July 27 of that year, exactly 126 years before Ervin Santana held the Cleveland Indians hitless for the full nine innings of a ballgame in the American League, Clarkson took the hill on a Monday afternoon. Pitching for the Chicago White Stockings against the Providence Grays, and with Tommy Bond calling balls and strikes as the home plate umpire (Bond was a great and accomplished ballplayer in his own days as pitcher, and in 1882 was a member of the same Ruby Legs club that welcomed Clarkson to the bigs), Clarkson beat the Grays 4-0, throwing the first and only no-hitter of his career.Ervin Santana's no-hitter notes• Santana threw the season's third no-hitter, beating the Indians 3-1. He joins Francisco Liriano (May 3) and Justin Verlander (May 7) in the no-hit ledger in 2011.• It was the ninth no-hitter in Angels history (Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo combined for an eight-inning no-hitter on June 28, 2008. The visiting Angels lost that game to the Dodgers 1-0, with the home team not batting in the ninth).• Santana is the first pitcher to allow a run in an official no-hitter since Darryl Kile beat the Mets 7-1 on September 8, 1993.  •Since 1893, Santana is the 16th pitcher to throw an official no-hitter (complete game of at least nine innings) and not have the no-hitter be a shutout. The others: Vic Willis (1899), Nick Maddox (1907), Bob Rhoads ('08), Earl Hamilton ('12), Joe Benz ('14), Ed Lafitte ('14 -- Federal League), George Mogridge ('17), Dazzy Vance ('25), Bob Feller ('51), Don Nottebart ('63), Ken Johnson ('64), Dean Chance ('67), George Culver ('68), Joe Cowley ('86), & Darryl Kile ('93).Angels No-HittersPitcherDateBo BelinskyMay 5, 1962Clyde WrightJuly 3, 1970Nolan RyanMay 15, 1973  Nolan RyanJuly 15, 1973Nolan RyanSeptember 28, 1974Nolan RyanJune 1, 1975Mike WittSeptember 30, 1984 (perfect game)Mark Langston/M. WittApril 11, 1990Ervin SantanaJuly 27, 2011• Before Santana's gem, the Indians had last been no-hit on September 4, 1993, by the Yankees' Jim Abbott.• Santana's  no-hitter was the 117th (counting no-hitters thrown in Inter-league play and Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series) thrown by an AL pitcher.• Since the beginning of the 2009 season, there have been 11 no-hitters.• Prior to this start, Santana owned an 0-6 record and a 4.98 ERA in his career against the Indians, as well as being 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in 10 starts on the road in 2011. Before this game, Santana had made three previous starts in Cleveland in his career -- he was 0-2 with a 6.57 ERA.• Santana is the 41st pitcher in the live-ball era to strike out at least 10 batters in an official no-hitter.• Santana's no-hitter produced a game score of 94, tying him with Justin Verlander for the highest game score produced this season. Santana's start marked the 14th game this year to produce a score of at least 90. In the 2010 season, there had been 14 such starts through the end of July. The most recent season to produce more than 14 by the end of July was 1972, which had seen 18 starts with a game score of at least 90 by the morning of August 1.Felix HernandezBehind Felix Hernandez's seven innings of five-hit, one-run ball, the Mariners defeated the Yankees 9-2 to end their 17-game losing streak.  Hernandez improved to 6-3 with a 2.82 ERA in his career against the Yankees, and since the beginning of the 2009 season, is 5-0 in six starts (the Mariners have won all six), with a 1.29 ERA against New York.Hernandez was the starting pitcher in the Mariners last win before the losing streak. On July 5, he went eight innings and allowed one run with 10 strikeouts against the Athletics, but failed to record a decision when Brandon League blew the save opportunity. The Mariners victory that day moved the team to 43-43, two-and-a-half games out of first place.  Mariners Franchise: Most Hits Through First 33 MLB GamesPlayerGamesIchiro Suzuki52Alvin Davis39Julio Cruz38Dustin Ackley37Dustin AckleySeattle's Dustin Ackley went 3-for-5 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. That hit total is the fourth highest for any Mariners player through his first 33 contests.Ichiro SuzukiIchiro Suzuki went 4-for-5 -- his 45th career game with four-or-more hits.  Those 45 games tie Suzuki with Goose Goslin, Pie Traynor, Doc Cramer and Tony Gwynn for the 20th most since 1920.John DanksJohn Danks tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed one run in six innings as the White Sox beat the Tigers 2-1. Over his past six starts, Danks is 4-0 with a 0.98 ERA in 36 2/3 innings, and has struck out 35 while walking seven. Before this run, Danks was 0-8 with a 5.25 ERA for the season.Matt CainMatt Cain (7 innings, one unearned run)) out-dueled Cole Hamels (7 2/3 innings, 2 runs), and the Giants beat the Phillies, 2-1. The Phillies (3.00 ERA from starters) and the Giants (3.22 ERA) have the top two starting staff ERA's in the Majors.GiantsThe Giants 2-1 win marked their Major League-leading 28th one-run victory of the season, and gave San Francisco as many one-run wins as they had all of last season (they were 28-24 in one-run games last year, and are now 28-13 in 2011).Emilio BonifacioEmilio Bonifacio went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 25 games, tying Kevin Millar (2002) for the second-longest hitting streak in Marlins history. Over the past 10 seasons, Bonifacio is the 26th player to hit safely in at least 25 consecutive games in a season.MarlinsThe Marlins got two home runs from Mike Cameron and one from Mike Stanton and beat the Nationals, 7-5. Florida has hit at least two homers in five straight games, tying a franchise high set in 2005.Dustin PedroiaDustin Pedroia went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 24 games. Pedroia, who is batting .406 and slugging .736 during the streak, is tied with Nomar Garciaparra (1998) for the 14th longest hitting streak in Red Sox history.Red SoxJacoby Ellsbury and Pedroia hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the game for the Red Sox in Boston's 12-5 win over the Royals. The pair became the first Red Sox duo to open a game with consecutive home runs since Troy O'Leary and John Valentin did it on July 21, 1995.David OrtizDavid Ortiz hit his 10th career grand slam and 20th home run of the season.  It is the 10th time in his career Ortiz has hit at least 20, with the last nine coming with the Red Sox. The streak is the longest in franchise history, eclipsing Doug Jones' streak of converting 25 consecutive opportunities in 1997.Jose AltuveAstros second baseman Jose Altuve went 3-for-5 and became the second player in franchise history to have a hit in each of his first seven Major League games. Altuve matched Russ Johnson, who began his career in 1997 with a hit in each of his first seven games.AthleticsThe Athletics beat the Rays, 13-4, for their third-straight win, and seventh win in their past 10 games.  Since the All-Star break, Oakland has scored 72 runs -- tied for fifth most in the Majors. In the first half of the season, the A's scored the third-fewest runs in the Majors.Hideki MatsuiHideki Matsui went 3-for-5, drove in five runs and hit his ninth home run of the year. In his past 13 games, Matsui is hitting .426 with eight extra-base hits (five doubles and three home runs) and has 18 RBIs.James ShieldsJames Shields (29 years and 219 days) started for the Rays in their loss to the Athletics. According to Tampa Bay's press notes, the game marked the 705th game in a row that was started by a Rays pitcher under the age of 30. That streak of 705 consecutive games topped the previous longest streak of 704 by the Washington Senators from 1913 to '17. Tampa Bay's streak began on May 25, 2007, when Shields (25 years and 156 days) made a start against the White Sox. Justin UptonJustin Upton hit two home runs in Arizona's 4-3 win over San Diego. In his past eight games, Upton is hitting .567 with five doubles, a triple, five home runs and 13 RBIs. title: Dogs set Guinness record at Padres game
content: They say that every dog has its day, and Wednesday in San Diego, 337 had theirs. The pooches set a Guinness World Record for the most dogs in a pet costume parade at PETCO Park's annual "Dog Days of Summer" event, when the D-backs topped the Padres, 4-3.  The spectacle featured an infield costume parade led by Tillman, the world famous skateboarding British Bulldog, as other canines flaunted around the bases while showing off their Padres spirit."It has been an amazing record attempt and I'm happy to say it was successful," said Freddie Hoff, adjudicator for Guinness World Records. The game's ceremonial first pitch was delivered by Tillman, who with the ball attached to his back, took himself on a 60-foot, six-inch walk from the rubber of the mound to home plate, where he was met by his owner.  The dogs also engaged in a pregame "tail"-gate party and were awarded prizes after being judged in a variety of categories."At PETCO we are passionate about having dogs active in all aspects of our life and thanks to our partnership with the San Diego Padres, this includes inviting hundreds of dogs out to the ballpark every year," says Greg Seremetis, vice president of marketing for PETCO.

title: Tribe acquires Fukudome in deal with Cubs
content: CLEVELAND -- The Indians understand that one transaction alone is not enough to solve all of their current issues. It does, however, take one move to initiate the process of improving Cleveland's chances of making the postseason. On Thursday, the Indians pulled the trigger on a trade that reeled in outfielder Kosuke Fukudome from the Cubs and sent a pair of Minor Leaguers off to Chicago. The Tribe is still exploring other potential deals -- strengthening the offense and the rotation being the team's top priorities. For now, Cleveland feels Fukudome can make an immediate difference."We feel we're a better team today than we were yesterday," Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said on Thursday. "We think Kosuke has a chance to help us both offensively and defensively."Never mind that Wednesday included Angels right-hander Ervin Santana's no-hitter against the Indians at Progressive Field. But Antonetti's point was made: Fukudome upgrades Cleveland's depleted outfield. He gives the Tribe a solid defender and a hitter capable of reaching base consistently. On the surface, the addition of Fukudome hardly looks like the catalyst that will propel the Indians to the American League Central crown. That is why Cleveland is still hunting for other ways to boost the roster prior to Sunday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline."I think this incrementally improves us," Antonetti said. "But that's not going to limit us in terms of the other opportunities we explore."In order to acquire the 34-year-old Fukudome, the Indians sent Class A Kinston outfielder Abner Abreu and Triple-A Columbus pitcher Carlton Smith to Chicago. The Cubs, meanwhile, agreed to pick up all but $775,000 of the estimated $4.7 million remaining on Fukudome's 2011 contract.Fukudome is under contract for $13.5 million this season, which is the final year under the four-year, $48 million deal he inked with the Cubs in December of 2007. Prior to coming to the Major Leagues, Fukudome spent nine seasons with the Chunichi Dragons in the Japanese Central League. It is also worth noting that Fukudome is potentially worth free-agent compensation this coming offseason. Antonetti indicated that, if the Indians offer Fukudome arbitration and he declines in favor of free agency, the outfielder would qualify as a Type B free agent (worth one compensatory pick), as things currently stand.Final approval of the deal was placed in the hands of Fukudome, whose four-year pact with the Cubs included a limited no-trade clause. Cleveland was listed among the prohibited teams, but the Japanese outfielder waived his rights and allowed the two ballclubs to complete the swap."It was a difficult decision to make," Fukudome told reporters in Milwaukee. "And not simply because I was here for a long time, but also it's a different league."The Indians are hoping Fukudome's style will also play in the American League. In 87 games with the Cubs this season, the left-handed-hitting outfielder hit at a .273 clip with three home runs, 15 doubles and 13 RBIs. Along the way, he posted a .374 on-base percentage, which would rank second among Indians regulars.Fukudome admittedly did not know much about Cleveland."I know there is a lake, Lake Erie," he said. "And I know it looks like Chicago."As things currently stand, Fukudome will get the majority of the playing time in right field until Shin-Soo Choo (broken left thumb) returns from the disabled list. On Wednesday, Choo cited the Aug. 16-18 series against the White Sox as his target for rejoining Cleveland's ailing lineup. When Choo and center fielder Grady Sizemore, or both, do return to the mix, Fukudome has the ability to slide to another outfield position. Fukudome has spent the majority of his career in right field for the Cubs, but he has also manned center in 126 of his 475 career games in the Majors."He has some versatility in the outfield," Antonetti said. "Our focus right now is trying to improve the team as much as we can so when Choo and Grady get back, if we're still in contention, they're return still has an impact on our competitiveness."With Choo and Sizemore both sidelined, Cleveland has been employing an outfielder of Michael Brantley in left, rookie Ezequiel Carrera in center and Austin Kearns or Travis Buck in right.Fukudome will essentially assume the role previously filled by Buck, who hit .228 in 50 games this year for the Tribe. To clear room on the 40-man and active rosters for Fukudome's arrival -- he is expected to be in the lineup for the Tribe on Friday -- the Indians designated Buck for assignment. The Indians have 10 days to either trade or release Buck, or to re-assign him to a Minor League affiliate, if he clears waivers."It was a difficult decision with Travis," Antonetti said. "But we felt [acquiring Fukudome] was going to mostly displace his at-bats and we needed to create a spot on the 40-man roster. That's why we went that route."Antonetti said Fukudome -- a leadoff hitter for most of this season -- has the ability to hit in multiple spots within Cleveland's lineup. That decision will be left to manager Manny Acta. Brantley and Carrera have both spent time in the lineup's first slot with Sizemore on the disabled list."He makes our team better and that's all you can ask for," Acta said. tittle: Cesar Cielo swims at world championships under doping cloud
content: SHANGHAI (AP) -- While other athletes expressed concern about Cesar Cielo's doping ruling, swimming governing body FINA has announced it is "actively considering" adopting a biological passport program.
Cielo, the Olympic and world champion, was cleared Thursday to compete in Authentic Corey Hart Jersey the world championships after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a decision by the Brazilian swimming federation.
FINA Authentic Evan Longoria Jersey had challenged a Brazilian federation decision to give Cielo only a warning after he tested positive for furosemide, a banned diuretic and masking agent, at a meet in Rio de Janeiro in May.
Cielo said he consumed the drug in a contaminated batch of a Authentic Troy Tulowitzki Jersey food supplement he regularly used.
Other recent doping cases involving furosemide have seen athletes banned for up to 14 months.
"I was told numerous times to take measures that whatever you put in your body you're responsible for," American sprinter Jason Lezak said Saturday. "Obviously there's new laws now than over the 15 years that I've been swimming, so hopefully people will learn from this and move on. But right now I don't think there's Ubaldo Jimenez Jersey a lot of happy people around (the pool)."
Decisions for two other Brazilians - Nicholas Santos and Henrique Barbosa - also were upheld, while the CAS gave Vinicius Waked, who had previously served a two-month ban for a separate doping offense, a one-year ban.
FINA had appealed for three-month bans for Cielo, Santos and Barbosa, and requested a one-year ban for Waked. Cielo -- who won the 50-meter freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and swept the 50 and 100 frees at the last worlds, is the only one of the four Brazilians competing in Shanghai.
Biological Authentic Ubaldo Jimenez Jersey passports contain continuously updated blood profiles for athletes like those currently used in cycling. Variations from the profile could indicate doping.
"I'm convinced (Cielo) Authentic Prince Fielder Jersey is a champion, no matter what -- it's the system that doesn't Brewers Prince Fielder Jersey work, and that's what worries me," said two-time world champion Filippo Magnini of Italy. "I'm going to race against him and I'll shake his hand and try to beat him like I always have, but this has created a dangerous precedent.
Rockies Ubaldo Jimenez Jersey /> Doping cases involving supplements have varied greatly.
American swimmer Jessica Hardy withdrew from the U.S. team ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was ordered to serve a one-year Brewers Corey Hart Jersey ban despite the CAS accepting that she wasn't at fault for a contaminated dietary supplement.
Ukrainian tennis player Kristina Antoniychuk was banned for 14 months even though the International Tennis Federation accepted that furosemide was in a prescription medication. And Russia's gymnastics body banned Kristina Goryunova for one year after she tested positive for furosemide at the 2010 national championships.
"I was always advised that whoever makes a mistake -- whether it's small or large, indirect or involuntary -- will have to pay for it," added Magnini, according to the ANSA news agency. "We're tested continually and required to communicate where we are and Authentic David Price Jersey at what time. It's always stressful and then you see it's all for naught because there's no punishment.
"They've also hurt Cielo, because I don't know how he's going to present himself."
FINA President Julio Maglione and Executive Director Cornel Marculescu said they had done all they could to settle Cielo's Rays David Price Jersey case, and that the CAS ruling had to be accepted.
"We have always told the swimmers, 'Be careful when you take a supplement, because you never Rockies Troy Tulowitzki Jersey know what you are taking. You don't know what's inside,"' Marculescu said.
"The range is huge -- from a warning to two years -- and I understand that there are swimmers and athletes and people who don't understand why one gets six months and another get two years," Authentic Casey McGehee Jersey Marculescu added.
The reasons behind the CAS Casey McGehee Jersey ruling won't be released for several weeks.
"CAS is the final level you can go to and they made a final decision and we have to accept that," said Australia David Price Jersey head coach Leigh Nugent. "We are here to race the world championships and it's unfortunate this issue has come on the eve.
"We have spoken to our team and I'll observe my own advice -- we can't be distracted by this issue and it's done and dusted and we are just going to get on with the racing and I'll get on with preparing Brewers Casey McGehee Jersey my team."
According Rays Evan Longoria Jersey to Dr. Andrew Pipe, the chairman of FINA's doping control review board, creating a biological passport is the only way to detect banned drug use.
"A proposal for a biological passport kind of program for FINA is now being actively considered, and I'm confident that progress will be made in that direction," Pipe said.
"We know that the contemporary doping issues that all sports face relate Corey Hart Jersey not so much in the area of hormonal abuse, because that can be detected with conventional urine tests in or out of competition, but those agents which increase the properties of the blood so it increases Prince Fielder Jersey the ability of the blood to carry oxygen," Pipe added.
While the traditional swimming events don't begin until Sunday, Pipe said 115 doping tests have already been conducted at these championships, with "several hundred" to be completed in all.
No positive tests have been reported so far.

tittle: China, Wu Mingxia win Zack Greinke Jersey 3-meter at diving world championships
content: SHANGHAI (AP) -- Wu Mingxia couldn't stop smiling. With the gold medal around her neck, she was finally the world champion in 3-meter diving after Rickie Weeks Jersey settling for silver twice before.
Wu held off teammate He Zi by 1.7 points Saturday to give China its ninth gold medal and 13th overall at the outdoor pool.
China could complete its first sweep of the gold medals at worlds Sunday. Brewers Zack Greinke Jersey Qio Bo was the top qualifier heading into the men's 10-meter final.

It was Wu's first individual springboard title after being runner-up in 2005 and '07. She didn't compete in the event two years ago in Rome.

tittle: Cadel Evans wins Tour de France; Mark Cavendish wins in Paris
content: PARIS (AP) -- Authentic Trevor Cahill Jersey Cadel Evans has been keeping fans back home up all night watching him become the first Australian to win the Tour de France. It's a victory that's been a long time coming.
Over the years, Evans has been better known for failing to live up to expectations than for overachieving.
He Magglio Ordonez Jersey finished second in the 2007 Tour and was expected to win the next year, but was runner-up Miguel Cabrera Jersey again. Last year, he was leading the race but crashed and fractured his left elbow. The pain was too much and he dropped out of contention in tears, ultimately finishing 50 minutes behind winner Alberto Contador.
This time, persistence, planning -- and Authentic Magglio Ordonez Jersey a little good luck -- paid Authentic Justin Verlander Jersey off.
"I hope I brought a great deal of joy to my countrymen, my country," Evans said Sunday after climbing onto the winner's podium on the Champs-Elysees. "It's been a pleasure and an honor to fly the flag over here."
The 34-year-old Evans, the oldest champion since before World War II, stood on the podium wrapped in his national flag, his eyes tearing up as he listened to the Australian national anthem. He then embraced Andy and Frank Schleck.

The brothers from Luxembourg had pushed him all the way to the end, but were finally defeated by his solo strength in Saturday's race against the clock.
On the traditional Tour victory lap on Paris' Champs-Elysees, champagne in hand, Evans seemed to stop to celebrate with just about every Kurt SuzukiJersey fan bearing an Australian flag.
As he Authentic Miguel Cabrera Jersey clambered into his BMC team bus, hundreds of people shouted praise, one yelling, "Cadel, we love you!" and others chanting "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - Oy, Oy, Oy!"
This was a very different Tour from the ones of the recent past that have been dominated by a single rider -- Lance Armstrong or Contador. At least seven riders could have won it with only a few days remaining.
Contador, who is fighting a legal battle to hold on to last year's victory after a positive drug test, faded away in the final stages and finished fifth.
On Sunday's largely ceremonial ride to Paris, Contador smiled and chatted with Evans, even patting the Australian on the back. Afterward, the three-time Tour champion said he told Evans "he was the strongest rider, and it's normal that he won."
Evans' final margin of victory over Andy Schleck was 1 minute, 34 seconds, but all of that was achieved in Saturday's time trial. Evans hadn't panicked when Andy Authentic Kurt Suzuki Jersey Schleck had jumped ahead on the climb of the Galibier pass on Thursday and then took the overall lead in Friday's last mountain stage.
Evans' wife, Chiara, did. She was consumed with emotion -- at times unable to bear the suspense when he needed to make up 57 seconds in the time trial to wrest the coveted yellow jersey from the younger Schleck Andrew Bailey Jersey brother.
"You don't want to know. I was really, really bad. Crying and everything, and calling everyone 'How many seconds?' " she said.
With his victory, she said, "I want to let the moment sink in. Cadel needs some rest. I need some rest too!"
The Tour was also notable for the hard work of Thomas Voeckler, who defied all predictions to wear the yellow jersey as race leader for 10 days, delighting the victory-starved French, and for the success of British rider Mark Cavendish, who captured five stages -- including Sunday's final one -- and won the green jersey of top sprinter.
In a race often marred in the Brennan Boesch Jersey past by doping allegations, only one rider has so far tested positive -- Alexandr Kolobnev of Russia -- although many of the doping tests done this year have yet to be analyzed. Contador's positive test last year only came out after the race finished.
Evans has never faced doping allegations, and his Athletics Andrew Bailey Jersey longtime coach Aldo Sassi was known to be opposed to doping. Some have suggested that may be why until now he hasn't been able to achieve his promise, though Evans won't discuss that possibility.
"When you look at the race, it's obvious that we don't have the same feeling like in the past, when riders were sometimes supermen," Michel Rieu, scientific adviser of the French anti-doping agency AFLD, told The Associated Press. "Most of the riders suffered a Athletics Kurt Suzuki Jersey lot, you could see it on their faces, and they didn't give the impression of riding scooters instead of bikes."
When Evans crossed the line on Paris' most famed avenue Sunday, he was catapulted to global stardom.
"I just want to say thank you to everyone who's had faith in me," Evans said atop the winner's podium, with the famed Arc de Triomphe behind, the Schleck brothers at his sides and fans' cheers erupting. "I couldn't be happier than to be standing up right here in the middle."
Evans took a call of congratulations from Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard after he secured the title Saturday. The pair joked about the economic consequences to Australia because Evans' fans have been staying up to watch him race on the other side of the world.
Tigers Miguel Cabrera Jersey /> "He suggested that it'd all be all right in the Tigers Justin Verlander Jersey end because people would feel so full of morale that they'd be cantering into work and working harder," said Gillard, who resisted suggestions that she should Authentic Andrew Bailey Jersey declare a public holiday to mark the victory.
Justin Verlander Jersey /> Although Evans has a high profile in his home country, he is publicity-shy and even many Australians find him a bit of a mystery.
Evans has been trying to win the Tour since 2005, and many observers were wondering whether his time had passed. He was not considered one of the top favorites going into the race, but he soon showed his mettle.
Just last year, riding through the pain of the elbow fracture, he lost the yellow jersey and fell out of contention in Stage 9 in the Alps, when Schleck and Contador blew him Authentic Brennan Boesch Jersey away. Afterward, Evans broke down in tears, insisting he had let his team down.
This time, he rarely made his presence known, but won Stage 4 and kept close to the favorites in the mountains. With a small lead that he'd picked up in the early stages of the race and a lot of strength in time trialing, he knew that he didn't need to attack in order to win.
Still, when Andy Schleck broke away from the field on the Galibier, observers thought Evans' BMC team had made a crucial mistake. But Evans remained calm and used his time trial skill to overcome the Schlecks.
Andy Schleck -- who has finished second in the Tour three straight times Trevor Cahill Jersey - was calm about the loss.
"Cadel was the best of the Tour and he deserved to win," Athletics Trevor Cahill Jersey he said. "Second isn't bad, and my brother was on the podium too. I'll be back to win this Tour. We have a Tigers Magglio Ordonez Jersey date for next year."

tittle: South Carolina holds seminar Authentic Matt Kemp Jersey Jersey on James Loney Jersey collision injuries
content: COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Trainer Robbe Hedstrom carefully detailed the most painful Anaheim Andre Ethier Jersey moment of his athletic Anaheim Matt Kemp Jersey Jersey career when he watched a Cardinal Newman High Anaheim Clayton Kershaw Jersey School football player lay motionless in a remote summer camp as he and coaches scrambled to help.
"My mistakes," Hedstrom said Saturday, "almost cost a young man very dearly."
Hedstrom was among several presenters at a seminar on collision injuries put on by South Carolina's athletic Authentic James Loney Jersey and sports medicine departments. About 120 trainers, team doctors and other medical personnel attended the six-hour session at Williams-Brice Stadium. It included case studies from trainers at Georgia and Authentic Andre Ethier Jersey Tennessee and lengthy discussions on treating, diagnosing and Rafael Furcal Jersey managing concussions.
Few presentations were more riveting than Hedstrom's remembrance of that 2004 incident when he was in his second year as trainer and the Cardinals went to a rural area for football camp. Hedstrom said the hit took place on the final session of Authentic Casey Blake Jersey the day and the player "dropped like a sack of potatoes."
The practice field was in a rural part of South Carolina where cellphone service was nonexistent and the closest hospital was 30 minutes away. Hedstrom had also failed to pack a spine board, an essential piece of equipment when dealing with a potential spine injury. It took nearly two hours for Clayton Kershaw Jersey the teen to be taken by helicopter to a Columbia hospital.
Hedstrom told the group he failed to properly plan for the outing, talk to parents about their children's safety or alert local emergency personnel about Cardinal Newman's plans.
"I bet some of you are wondering how I still have my license," Hedstrom said.
That was much of the reason for hosting the seminar, said South Carolina medical director Dr. Jeffery Guy. High schools start football practice on Friday with colleges following soon after and the university wanted to share experiences and resources with all athletic trainers.
"We feel being a steward for the state is a Matt Kemp Jersey Jersey very important part of what we do," Guy said.
George Wham, athletic trainer for Anaheim Casey Blake Jersey Pelion High, said seminars like this spread proper and updated practices and guidelines to high schools, middle school and athletic club Anaheim James Loney Jersey teams.
"It's a good opportunity to brush up on some things that you need to be thinking about and hearing some new stuff," he said.
The sessions covered all types of collision injuries, including damage to the eyes, the mouth and teeth and "stingers," the sharp pain felt after a hard hit where the player comes off the field with his arm and shoulder drooping.
Dr. Christopher Mazoue of the South Carolina School of Medicine was a former football player at Cornell and said he had at least 25 episodes of stinging pain, also called "burners," while playing for the Big Red.
In the past, Mazoue said coaches would mostly wait until such pain subsided and send the player back in. Now, a player with a history of such problems could be kept from the field. That was the case with the son of South Carolina's beloved Heisman Trophy winner Authentic Clayton Kershaw Jersey George Rogers. Linebacker Tray Rogers gave up football after signing to play linebacker at South Carolina in 2003.
"And his dad totally agreed," Mazoue said.
Georgia athletic trainer Mike Dillon talked about the paralyzing injury in March to outfielder Johnathan Taylor, who was hurt in a head-to-head collision with a teammate. Dillon stressed having a plan in place to take care of the player, the family and the rest of the team. Taylor, who Dillon said is classified as a quadriplegic, is expected to return to Georgia for school in January.
Several presentations dealt with concussions.
"That's the hot topic," Guy said.
Things have changed since the days when players typically went right back in after getting their "bell rung," and sideline tests have advanced far past a trainer or assistant holding up some fingers for the affected player to guess before returning.
The new motto for concussions is "when in doubt, sit them out," said South Carolina Dr. Ramon Ylama.
That's becoming easier to do since many in the latest generation of coaches played Anaheim Rafael Furcal Jersey the game with properly taught athletic trainers on the lookout for injuries, said Wham of Pelion High.
"I think coaches understand the role of the athletic trainer," he said. "I think it's a lot different than a generation earlier."
South Carolina trainer Clint Haggard showed how medical staff from Authentic Rafael Furcal Jersey the Gamecocks and Alabama worked together to help receiver Moe Brown, who was knocked unconscious during a game in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 2009. Both sides rushed Brown and in concert put him up on a spine board and took him from the field for examinations. Haggard said it comes from having previous relationships with his Alabama counterparts and talking to them before the game.
Hedstrom, the Cardinal Newman trainer, knows that as well as anyone. His Andre Ethier Jersey player recovered and "walks and talks just like any of us here," he said. Casey Blake Jersey These days, Hedstrom leaves almost nothing to chance in prepping for practices and games.
"If you've got a plan," Hedstrom continued, "you'll be standing on firmer ground."
