After being shredded by Ryan Fitzpatrick against Buffalo, the Raiders will brace themselves for teams that attempt to do the same even if it isn't normally in their game plan.It would definitely be a possibility, cornerback Stanford Routt said. This is a copycat league, so whatever you don't handle one week, you will see it again until you can stop it.Jackson put himself on the opposite sideline and knew what he would do.I'd find out if we got it handled, got it fixed, Jackson said. That's the nature of the business. One team sees what worked against you, and people are going to see if you've got it solved.I think our players understand that. We're looking forward to the challenge. The last time the Jets played the Raiders in Oakland on Oct. 25, 2009, Mark Sanchez was caught by TV cameras on the bench munching on a hot dog with his team leading 38-0 midway through the fourth quarter. He later apologized, saying he was hungry, hadn't eaten, and wouldn't do it again.Whether it was the humiliation of the score at the time or the act of eating the hot dog, the Raiders remember. Although Campbell said, we haven't talked about it, it's been a point of conversation.Coach showed that to us, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly said. It was just a reminder. We're going to remind him of that during the game.Jackson said, I hope we can make it more interesting for him so he doesn't have to eat hot dogs. Hopefully we can take the mustard and the relish and the onions and all that and put it away and play a little football. Will Jackson use Sanchez and his hot dog as motivation?I can't let all my secrets out. The guy had a hot dog. Was it Der Weinerschnitzel? I don't know. It looked to be pretty good the way he was eating it. So I'm sure we'll have some fun this week.-The Raiders sold out exactly one game last year and will be hard-pressed to get many sellouts this year with a a season ticket base estimated at under 30,000.But they've sold enough tickets to be optimistic about the opener to the point where Campbell is excited about the possibility of a raucous home crowd.I hear we've got a sold-out crowd, that's exciting, Campbell said. I think our fans respect the way that we're playing. It's not like we lost last week because we didn't show up. We showed up and played hard, Buffalo just kind of caught fire at the end. They understand we're laying it all on the line for them.Whether it's sold out or close to sold out, Jackson is looking forward to some noise after two half-empty crowds in preseason, two preseason road games and the first two regular-season games on the road. We've been away from our fans. We want that place filled up, silver and black, screaming and yelling for this team, Jackson said.Raiders center Samson Satele is a close observer of players at his position and thinks the Jets will be hurting without center Nick Mangold, out two weeks with an injury. He's the best center in the league, hands down, Satele said. Everything he does, pass pro, run blocks, screens, that's why he gets paid a lot. He's the best.If he doesn't play, I know Rex Ryan would have somebody else to step in there, but not as good as Nick. Just a guy to get the job done. It's a pretty big blow if Nick doesn't play. They've got to handle Richard Seymour, Tommy Kelly and John Henderson.Sebastian Janikowski is back in the news again, and for reasons other than his NFL record-tying 63-yard field goal against Denver in Week 1, or his 11 touchbacks in 11 kickoffs through two games.According to a woman who made a criminal complaint about Janikowski following an alleged incident that occurred over a year ago, the Raiders' kicker forced her into a room in the back of a nightclub and wouldn't allow her to leave, screamed at her and pushed her because he thought she had been taking photos of him.Janikowski had several alcohol-related arrests at Florida State and in his early days with the Raiders, but none since 2003.BY THE NUMBERS 22 The number of touchdowns Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson has scored against the Raiders, more than he's scored against any other opponent.QUOTE TO NOTE I keep saying the time is now. We're 1-1, we're right at the top of our division. We need to keep playing and keep winning. We need to go back in that winning mode, like I know we can, like I know we will. Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams believes that once defenses begin to respect rookie quarterback Cam Newton a little more and begin dropping more safeties into coverage things will open up in the run game.I do, or they're just going to be stubborn and he's going to keep torching them, Williams said. We'll see.Williams has just 43 yards on the ground in two games. However, that hardly means he's concerned about the team's perceived lack of production in the running game.I don't think there's an issue with the running game, Williams said. We're not the offense that a lot of people are accustomed to seeing. It's not run, run, pass. That's no longer our philosophy here and I'm sure that's evident in the first six games.Williams doesn't seem to mind.I've stated before I don't care whether we run the ball or pass the ball as long as we win I'm fine with it, he said. But I think we're going to click whenever that game comes when we need to run the ball a great deal and they need to lean heavy on us running backs. I think that game is coming.Williams also views the short passes to the running backs there were 12 of those last week as an extension of the running game.Hey, our ultimate goal is to score touchdowns and however that's done, it's done, Williams said. The red zone has been the dead zone for the Carolina Panthers this season. And it's one of the main reasons the team is 0-2.The Panthers have visited the dead, er, red zone eight times and come away with only three touchdowns. They've settled for three field goals and turned the ball over twice on downs late in the game in losses to Arizona and Green Bay.It's a little bit of everything, offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski said. Everything down in the red zone is magnified. The windows are tighter to throw in, there are more defenders near the ball and obviously penalties and those types of things are magnified as well.We had a little bit of everything happening to us so far and we have to really just focus in and finish the drive. That's what we talked to the guys about the last couple of days.Carolina ranks second in the league in total offense, averaging 476 yards and 26 first downs per game, a vast improvement over last season. But the Panthers haven't finished drives nearly enough and have scored only 44 points. The red zone is a very specific part of the game, coach Ron Rivera said. It's also part of the game that really you need time both offensively and defensively to become a good red-zone team. I know from my defensive experience it is about reps, reps and reps, and you can never make up for those reps as you get going. The Panthers missed 24 practices during minicamps and OTAs due to the NFL lockout, limiting the time they had to spend on their red-zone offense. It has been reflected on the field. Many of Cam Newton's passes down near the goal line have been off the mark, the result of poor timing with his receiversAfter Sunday's game, offensive tackle Jordan Gross suggested the Panthers need to run the ball more in the red zone, something they haven't done much of despite having DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart in the backfield. When the Panthers do stay on the ground, it's normally Newton who's been keeping the ball. He has both rushing touchdowns this season for the Panthers. We get down inside the 15 and we throw it every time, Gross said. I mean Cam Newton scored on that one QB keeper to the right, but you know I'd like to have 50 percent of those plays be runs. And I don't think Chud is trusting us to get it done right now.I don't think anybody in this organization wants us to rush for under 100 and throw for over 400 every week, especially without points to back it up. We've got to do better on the ground. We've got to take pressure off Cam. We've got to let him hand the ball off 20-25 times a game and get 150 yards and a couple of scores out of that. That's what we're supposed to do. We're not doing that enough and it's hurting us.Added Chudzinski: It's something we have to keep working through and we'll be fine with it. We'll make improvements and start getting the ball in the end zone.SERIES HISTORY 5th regular-season meeting. Jaguars lead series, 3-1. The Bengals receivers were already reeling after Jordan Shipley was placed on injured reserve. With the events of the past couple days, a shorthanded unit might be a whole lot thinner for Sunday's game against San Francisco.Jerome Simpson was excused from practice on Thursday as an investigation into the delivery of a 2.5 pound package of marijuana to his Northern Kentucky home continues. And as if things can't get worse enough, A.J. Green was listed as limited on the practice report due to a toe injury. Green and Simpson have combined for 345 of the Bengals' 525 receiving yards through the first two games.Head coach Marvin Lewis had no comments about Simpson's availability for Sunday's game and said that Simpson is cooperating with the investigation.Andre Caldwell, who was already going to get increased snaps with Shipley's injury, could get the start if Simpson is inactive with Ryan Whalen possibly being the slot receiver. It would be the first action for Whalen, a sixth-round pick, who has plenty of experience in West Coast offenses from playing at Stanford. Coaches considered Whalen to be one of the more disciplined route runners in this year's draft class.Like Caldwell, Whalen also has versatility and can play all three receiver spots. Brandon Tate would be more of an outside receiver and Andrew Hawkins, who was added to the 53-man roster on Tuesday, is more of a slot receiver.During the Bengals' second preseason game in New York, the offense had three turnovers in the first four possessions. It could be a time where a rookie quarterback could crumble in the huddle. Instead it served as a galvanizing moment for Andy Dalton. In the second quarter, Dalton led the Bengals on a scoring drive. The next week after a turnover on the opening possession, he led the Bengals to scores on three of the next four drives. Some players consider Dalton getting through the Jets game and rebounding as a major source of his early success. At first he was quiet in the preseason, but he's really jumped out of his shell, left tackle Andrew Whitworth said. The biggest thing for Andy right now is that he's playing the game all in, heart on his sleeve. Passionate. That's awesome.During the second half of last Sunday's game at Denver, the Bengals were behind 17-3 when Dalton again voiced his frustration. What it led to was 280 passing yards and a near rally over the Broncos that fell short by two points.Dalton's first two starts have had ratings of 100 or more, becoming the first rookie since Dan Marino in 1983 to accomplish that. He will go for his third straight when the Bengals host San Francisco on Sunday. As time has gone on he has realized that this is his team. He's got to do what it takes to rally the troops whether he is 19 years old or 59 years old, offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said. It doesn't matter when you are playing the quarterback position. That is what is necessary sometimes and it comes from the heart so it is believable and realistic and people respond to it. He is not an over the top guy, it doesn't happen all the time, but when it does happen people respond. It has been Dalton's passion that has impressed veterans. Wide receiver Andre Caldwell said his drive almost mirrors what he saw from Tim Tebow in the huddle at Florida. While players discuss Dalton's assertiveness, it has been his arm that has started to silence critics a little. After a lack of throwing downfield through the preseason, Dalton showed nice velocity and timing with routes down the middle and deep. The big question right now is whether the Bengals will keep their ground and pound style or become a little more balanced. Gruden said the Bengals need to both. The better we get on offense the more people are going to touch the ball. We can't be a one-dimensional team, we have no chance, Gruden said.SERIES HISTORY 12th regular-season meeting. 49ers lead series, 8-3. The 49ers are 3-2 in Cincinnati but 0-1 at Paul Brown Stadium. Rookie end Jabaal Sheard played so well being switched to the left side last week that coach Pat Shurmur wants to keep the change permanent. Sheard made five tackles, had a quarterback hurry and got a strip sack on Colts quarterback Kerry Collins.Jayme Mitchell seemed to benefit from the change, too. He made four tackles as the right end.I think they're getting better, and we're finding the best way to use them, Shurmur said. I think that's probably the way we're going to go with it now. Keep Jabaal on the defensive left, offensive right. I think they did a good job and they're getting better.Sheard had three tackles against the Bengals as the starting right end.The Browns beat the Dolphins in Miami late last season on a 23-yard field goal by Phil Dawson as time expired to break a 10-10 tie. Sunday's game marks the latest regular-season home opener in team history. The previous latest home opener was on Sept. 24, 1972, when the Bengals beat the Steelers 15-10 at Riverfront Stadium. The Bengals are 25-18 in home openers, including a 15-10 win over Baltimore in Week 2 last year. Under Marvin Lewis, they are 5-3.The last two Bengals-Niners games in Cincinnati have been high scoring but both won by the Bengals 44-30 in 1999 and 41-38 in 2003.The Bengals are 12-4-1 in their last 17 home games against NFC teams. Going back even further, they are 23-11-1 since 1993. Last year though the Bengals lost to both NFC teams Tampa Bay and New Orleans by a combined seven points.According to the league's analysis of Week 1 rosters, the Bengals are the youngest team in the AFC in terms of age 25.74 years and have the second-lowest experience at 3.6 years. They also have the least amount o 30 and over players in the league with just two Chris Crocker and Nate Clements. They now have three with Donald Lee signing last week.Sunday's game will be blacked out in the home market of Cincinnati, Dayton and Louisville, Ky. This marks the fifth straight non-sellout after a string of 57 straight sellouts.RB Cedric Benson has a ratio of one 100-yard game for every three starts, which is the best ratio in team history. The previous best was by Rudi Johnson who had one for every 3.16 starts. Benson is tied for fourth on the team's list with 14 100-yard games in 42 Bengals starts.WR A.J. Green had his own accomplishment in the loss at Denver. His 10-catch, 124-yard day made him the first Bengals rookie receiver since Cris Collinsworth in 1981 to post a double-digit reception, 100-yard game.BY THE NUMBERS 6 Number of consecutive games the Bengals have lost when one of their quarterbacks pass for 300 yards or more.QUOTE TO NOTE It's going to be a lot of fun. Just two games into the season, Miami Dolphins players are already finding themselves defending coach Tony Sparano amid the team's 0-2 start. Asked whether the team still fully supports Sparano and his coaching staff, veteran linebacker Karlos Dansby gave a quick answer.Without a doubt, man, Dansby said. These guys are awesome. There's too much experience in this building not to have confidence in how the coaches have been coaching right now. There's too much experience in the building, man. We've just got to soak it up, got to be sponges, man.The Dolphins this weekend travel to Cleveland in desperate need of a victory. The game at the Browns marks the beginning of a tough stretch that will have the Dolphins on the road for nearly a month. They play three consecutive games on the road at Cleveland, at San Diego and at the New York Jets; though the Dolphins' bye week comes after the San Diego game. Dansby said he and the team's other veterans need to do a better job of leading the Dolphins' less experienced players. The guys that have been here for a while, who have been in the game for a while are just trying to show the young guys how it's done, Dansby said. Meanwhile, Jason Taylor, another veteran Dolphins' linebacker, expressed disappointment on Thursday that the private team meeting he led became public. Some players shared details of the meeting earlier in the week with reporters.Taylor led the meeting after the Dolphins' 23-13 defeat against the Texans on Sunday. It's a little disturbing that what was talked about in the locker room to begin with was talked about outside of the locker room, Taylor said. That's a little disappointing to me. There was no media in there so it shouldn't have been public.Taylor placed the blame for the team's slow start on the players and not on the coaching staff.Coach Sparano is not going to miss a tackle. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is not going to blow a coverage. Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is not going to throw an interception or do anything wrong on offense. Those guys aren't on the field. Owner Stephen Ross is not on the field ... it's all us. It's as simple as that.Through the first two games of the season, only three teams in the NFL Houston, New England and Washington have had more chances in the red zone than the Miami Dolphins. Yet the Dolphins have squandered those opportunities more often than not.The Dolphins have scored touchdowns in just four of 10 trips inside their opponents' 20-yard line a percentage that ranks among the bottom one-third of the NFL. Reversing that trend will be a focus when the Dolphins travel to Cleveland, where they haven't won since 1993.Dolphins coach Tony Sparano cited negative plays for the Dolphins' problems in the red zone.Negative plays seem to be a common trait, Sparano said. After two games I would tell you that we're right around eighth-worst in the NFL in negative red-zone plays ... You know, we've had a sack, we've had a couple of penalties, we've had a couple of minus runs. We've had a turnover down there, obviously. The penalties, the sack and the turnover all came in the Dolphins' 38-24 defeat against the Patriots in Week 1. In a 23-13 loss against the Texans, the Dolphins had fewer negative plays in the red zone, but even more frustration there.Brandon Marshall dropped what would have been a touchdown from Chad Henne during the second half of that game, just as the Dolphins were attempting to rally. And in the first half, the Dolphins reached the Texans' 5- and 16-yard lines and came away with nothing not even a field goal. The Texans blocked a 22-yard field-goal attempt and Dan Carpenter missed from 34 yards out.It isn't play selection, it isn't any of those things there, Sparano said. We need to be a little bit more efficient down in that area of the field. When Sparano earlier in his career was a member of Bill Parcells' coaching staff in Dallas, he said Parcells implemented strict red-zone rules: No penalties, no exotic snap counts, no sacks and no turnovers.Sparano said he brought those rules to the Dolphins, too. But problems in the red zone have been characteristic of his teams in Miami. We keep those rules all the time and quarterback can recite those rules and everybody can recite those rules, Sparano said. It's one thing about talking about them and another thing about doing them and we have to do a better job in that area when it comes to that.SERIES HISTORY 15th regular-season meeting. Series is tied 7-7, but the Browns have won the past three meetings. Tampa Bay is pleased with the play of second-year pro Cody Grimm. Morris labeled him Mr. Reliable. Grimm started nine games last year before breaking his leg, and has picked up where he left off, defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake said. He's one of the tougher guys I've been around, Lake said. Ronde Barber is No.1 and Cody is right there now.Even Falcons wide receiver Roddy White has taken notice. He's always in the right position, White said. He's a smart, intelligent guy, knows the defense, moves around back there pretty good. He's kind of the guy that puts them together in the back end. He knows what he's doing back there, you just never see the guy out of position. Guys like that you can always count on.S Tanard Jackson, who was suspended indefinitely after Week 2 last season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, is eligible to apply for reinstatement Thursday. The Bucs declined comment, saying it is a league matter. It's uncertain whether the Bucs would have an interest in welcoming Jackson back.Linebacker Quincy Black, who was not available for comment Wednesday, was pulled from Sunday's game by Morris, leaving the Bucs without one of their defensive captains. Morris acknowledged it wasn't Black's best half, but blamed his play on an ankle injury and plans to stick by him.I'm not turning my back on a guy because he missed tackles, Morris said. However, the Bucs will likely play rookie middle linebacker Mason Foster on nickel passing downs and give him the helmet transmitter.Last week, it was Vikings defensive end Jared Allen. Another week, another reunion for a new Redskins starter. In the opener, nose tackle Barry Cofield faced the New York Giants. Last week, it was running back Tim Hightower's turn to try to show the Arizona Cardinals they made a mistake by trading him. Monday night, defensive end Stephen Bowen returns to Dallas.I'm real excited to go down there and prove a point, said Bowen, a Cowboys backup until he replaced the injured Marcus Spears for the second half of 2010. It's a chance for us to be 3-0 and 2-0 in the division. That's big, putting us right where we want to be. We've got one goal and that's to come out with a win. ... I really want this win. It's going to be very emotional for me. The Cowboys may feel they should've kept me after the game. When Bowen left Texas in early August after signing a five-year, 25.5 million contract with the Redskins, he did so with a heavy heart. The 27-year-old was sad to leave the Cowboys, especially All-Pro outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, his close friend, but Bowen was worried about his 5-week-old son Stephen III.The baby had been very premature along with twin brother Skyler, who had died 10 days after their birth. Stephen III, sister Trinity 23 months and their mother Tiffany finally joined dad in Virginia a couple of weeks ago. However, the baby has remained hospitalized although he's due to come home on Friday. When I left Stephen III was two pounds and now he's six so it's a big difference, said Bowen, who has been spending hours at the hospital when he hasn't been at Redskins Park, practicing, attending meetings or watching film. There's nothing like seeing him in person. He's a totally different person. It was a long road for him. He's doing great. So is Bowen, whom coach Mike Shanahan called mentally tough and amazing for being able to juggle football with the family crisis. The 6-foot-4, 306-pound Bowen has a sack and two hurries so far and has helped the resurgent Redskins rocket from 31st on defense last year to 11th after two games this year. He's what we were hoping for, Shanahan said.Redskins strong safety LaRon Landry lives to pop opposing ballcarriers, something he hasn't had a chance to do since his 2010 season ended with an injury to his left Achilles in Week 10.That was 301 days ago and Landry is tired of waiting to do what he does best. He's so sick of being a spectator that he joined free safety O.J. Atogwe for the introduction of the defensive starters before last Sunday's game against Arizona even though he was dressed in street clothes. So on Wednesday, 33 days after an injury to his right hamstring sidelined him when he was finally getting close to returning from the Achilles and five days before the surprising 2-0 Redskins visit archrival Dallas on the Monday Night Football stage, Landry declared himself ready.Don't calm me down; let me go, he said. Untame the beast. It's been a while. I've been counting them days. Man, I haven't played a game since Week 10 of 2010. You tell me what you would do, especially on a Monday night.Landry was limited during practice all week, as he has been for all the workouts for which he has been available since being activated off the physically unable to perform list before the opener. So coach Mike Shanahan was less sure about Landry's return, but the sixth overall pick in hew 2007 draft said his hamstring, injured during warm-ups in Indianapolis on Aug. 19, is good to go.I just feel comfortable, Landry said. Hamstrings are all about comfort level. If you second-guess yourself, you may pull it again because your body's not comfortable with sustaining all that you need to do on the field. Moving straight ahead is no problem, but you have to make that one sudden movement that will tweak it. I just feel comfortable in my mind that I'm able to do those things. You can't forget how to tackle or how to cover.Reed Doughty, who has been filling in alongside Atgowe, is a hustler who plays well against the run, but he doesn't intimidate opponents as Landry does. He's a special player, Atogwe said. We all know what he's capable of doing. He instantly makes us a better defense. The NFL's second-worst defense last year, the Redskins are ranked 11th through two games without Landry. So how good can they be with him wreaking havoc?Watching is terrible, said the Louisiana native. I hate it ... knowing what I could add to the defense. I can't wait to put my little ingredient in it. It's like a gumbo. I'm the cayenne pepper or the Tabasco sauce; come out there on fire. I'm kinda antsy to get out there and hit somebody.Series History: 101st regular-season meeting. Cowboys lead 60-38-2. The most historic regular-season meeting between the teams was on Thanksgiving 1974 when unknown backup QB Clint Longley replaced injured Dallas star Roger Staubach and rallied the host Cowboys to a stunning 24-23 victory.Copyright C 2011 The Sports Xchange. NEW ORLEANS AP - Steve Gleason may always be remembered most for his blocked punt on the night the Louisiana Superdome reopened for the first time after Hurricane Katrina - a play that stirred an already emotional crowd into a deafening, drink-spilling frenzy. The retired New Orleans Saints folk hero only hopes he can continue to lift people's spirits by the way he handles what until now has been a private struggle with ALS, a debilitating and ultimately fatal disease for which there currently is no cure.On Sunday, five years to the day after his memorable play became a symbol of a devastated community's will to carry on, Gleason, 34, went public with his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease."In a way, I see this as an opportunity to continue to be an inspiration, maybe even more so than I ever have been," said Gleason, a 5-foot-11, former Washington State standout who forged an eight-year NFL career in New Orleans as a special teams leader and reserve safety. Now the native of Spokane, Wash., who settled in New Orleans after retiring in 2008, is setting up an organization called Team Gleason. Its mission is to improve the lives of those who have ALS, the symptoms of which include gradual paralysis."You have to continue to do things you love," Gleason said. "There's technology available that, if I'm proactive, I can continue to do some of those things. You have to engage in passionate, remarkable human relationships, which has always been important to me."Gleason was an honorary captain for the coin toss of Sunday's game against Houston, walking with a limp to the center of the field with his hand on quarterback Drew Brees' shoulder. The crowd in the sold-out Superdome rose for a standing ovation when he was shown, wearing his old No. 37 jersey, on the stadium's video board. He raised his left arm over his head to initiate the crowd's traditional pregame "Who Dat!" chant. Brees then hugged him and walked with him back to the sideline, where Gleason's wife, Michel, now nearly eight months pregnant, gave him another hug and a football-style pat on his back side. Most people live three to five years with ALS after diagnosis, though some have lived longer and research on treatments continues. When Gleason was diagnosed last January, he and Michel had been seeing fertility specialists in hopes of conceiving their first child. He also was trying to finish a master's program in business administration at Tulane University. He briefly considered abandoning his school work, but returned to Tulane and got his MBA.He also had to address whether he and Michel should keep trying to start a family."More than ever I wanted to have a child, but it really was my wife's decision, because if things ran their course with me, potentially she'd have to be taking care of and supporting two people," said Gleason, who has limited use of his right arm, and who finds eating and drinking more challenging because of a weakening in his mouth and throat."Luckily for me, she didn't hesitate," Gleason said. Their first child is due Oct. 28.When Gleason played, he was easily recognizable by the long curly locks of light brown hair dangling from his helmet, and was a favorite among fans and teammates for the flair with which he played and lived. In 2006, his last season playing before spending 2007 on injured reserve, he was third on the Saints in special teams tackles with 14. His blocked punt in the victory over Atlanta on Sept. 25, 2006, was the fourth block of his career.Saints coach Sean Payton said the crowd's reaction was "probably the loudest I've ever heard any stadium - ever."Cleveland linebacker Scott Fujita, who played in New Orleans from 2006-09, said the play was his "most electric sports memory," and drove home how important the Saints' return to the city really was.Gleason used the term, "infinite joy," to describe what he felt in that moment.Fujita, who remains friends with Gleason, has been both saddened by Gleason's condition and uplifted by his enduring sense of humor and zest for life."He even said to some of us on the phone that he views this as an exciting challenge and opportunity," Fujita said. "Steve's one of the few people I think in this situation who could say something like that and actually mean it."Because scientific studies have shown increasing links between brain disease, such as dementia, and the frequency of concussions among football players, Gleason cannot help but wonder if his football career had something to do with his condition.Yet the question of whether he regrets playing football is a complicated one. He cannot be certain that he would have been spared from ALS had he never played football. He also cherishes the friendships and experiences he gained from his NFL career."It was amazing. I got this incredible adventure," Gleason said. "I did all these things most boys grow up dreaming to do."Dr. Steve Perrin, the chief scientific officer at the ALS Therapy Development Institute in Cambridge, Mass., said he is aware of 27 cases of NFL players being diagnosed with ALS, which is much higher than any other major American pro sport. However, he stressed that a conclusive link between concussions in sports and ALS has been tough to prove. He noted, for example, that there are no documented cases of NHL players with ALS, which remains a relatively rare disease in general. At this point, Gleason said he is more concerned with how he'll live with ALS than how he got it.For now, he can still walk without a cane, however gingerly, and enjoy dinners out with family and friends, though he sometimes needs help pulling a shirt on, washing his hair or cutting a steak.Talking is getting harder as well, so Gleason has been working on a video library in which he shares his most poignant memories and life lessons, both good and bad. He hopes the videos will allow his child to know him as he was before his symptoms made it more difficult for him to move or speak."Especially here in New Orleans, most of the people that my child will encounter, if I'm not here, will say, 'You're dad was amazing and he had this great football career, he was a hero for the city,' and almost in a sense build kind of a mythical image of me," Gleason said. "So what I've tried to do is sit down and really explain some of the struggles I've gone through and the less desirable parts of myself. ... I want them to know I went through a lot of the same things they went through. And I've had to go through one of the hardest things a person can go through, but hopefully shown the courage and grace and joy you can still have despite these circumstances." NEW YORK Eight players, including Tennessee's Kenny Britt, Tampa Bay's Aqib Talib and Cincinnati's Cedric Benson and Adam "Pacman" Jones, were subject to being suspended under the league's conduct policy for incidents during the lockout. A person with knowledge of the names confirmed to the Associated Press on Sunday that those four are joined on the list by New England's Albert Haynesworth, Arizona's Clark Haggans, Brandon Underwood and Johnny Jolly, both formerly of Green Bay. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made regarding any of the players. The story was first reported by Yahoo Sports www.yahoosports.com The NFL and the NFL Players Association previously agreed those eight could be disciplined, while 25 other players would not be. It's been unclear whether the league can fine or suspend players for conduct during the lockout when there was no collective bargaining agreement. The NFLPA technically was not a union at that time, so its ability to agree to such measures is in question, too. "We believe that no player should be subjected to discipline for incidents occurring during the lockout," NFLPA spokesman George Atallah told the AP on Sunday. "The NFL and the NFLPA signed a side letter to the CBA that resolved and absolved the overwhelming majority of players of conduct-related issues. We retain all of our rights and ability to challenge any player discipline related to incidents occurring during the lockout." Benson is appealing any discipline and has a hearing this week. Earlier this month, Benson spent five days in a Texas jail mopping floors, completing his sentence for misdemeanor assault. The Bengals running back had been arrested in July for allegedly punching a former roommate in downtown Austin, Texas. Last month, the league announced that Talib would not be suspended. The Buccaneers cornerback is facing a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police in the Dallas suburb of Garland say they believe the 25-year-old player and his mother shot at a man in March. Britt met with Commissioner Roger Goodell and was told he would not be suspended. Britt was arrested twice in New Jersey, with two warrants issued for falsifying information on driver's license applications in Tennessee. A municipal court date in New Jersey for three disorderly person charges from a June arrest was postponed. He previously pleaded guilty to a speeding arrest in his hometown of Bayonne. Jones, who is on Cincinnati's physically unable to perform list, faces trial in November on charges stemming from a July incident at a Cincinnati bar. The cornerback has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. A 2005 first-round draft pick by the Titans, Jones has been in and out of legal trouble, with at least six arrests over the years and involvement in about a dozen incidents that included police intervention. Haynesworth was indicted in April on misdemeanor sexual abuse for allegedly fondling the breast of his server in a hotel restaurant in Washington in February. Jolly was suspended by the NFL without pay last season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. In March, Jolly was arrested and charged again after a traffic stop. Police said they found a bottle containing 600 grams of codeine under a passenger seat and another bottle containing an unidentified substance. Underwood pleaded no contest to a reduced charge stemming from a dispute with his estranged wife. Underwood was accused of ripping a necklace off his wife, Brandie, outside their home after the Packers' Super Bowl ring ceremony June 16. He subsequently was released by the team. It was unclear why Haggans was on the list. Copyright 2011 by STATS LLC and The Associated Press. NASHVILLE, Tenn. AP - Denver coach John Fox would do it again. On a crucial fourth-and-goal from about a foot out early in the fourth quarter, Fox called a timeout and pulled his kicker off the field. He sent the offense back out to punch the ball in to the end zone looking for a bigger lead, already up 14-10.The Tennessee Titans stonewalled Willis McGahee for no gain, and the Titans rallied for a 17-14 win Sunday."I think at the end of the day on the road, fourth and not even a full yard, I'd do it again next week," Fox said. "We've got to be able to get that and get that in. Unfortunately, we didn't."Two possessions later, Denver's defense gave up a 95-yard scoring drive highlighted by quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's 58-yard toss to tight end Craig Stevens down to the Broncos 24. Daniel Graham, a former Broncos tight end and team captain, added to the insult by catching his first pass with Tennessee, a 4-yard touchdown from Hasselbeck with 4:24 left.Fox said he reconsidered the field goal because of the location. Matt Prater lined up for a 19-yarder before Fox took the timeout."Sometimes it's hard to tell where the ball is spotted. From what we got upstairs, it was six inches and we felt like we could get it in," Fox said.McGahee finished with 52 yards on 22 carries, while Kyle Orton threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns. But Tennessee also sacked him once and intercepted him twice, the last to end Denver's final drive. The Broncos 1-2 at least healed up with receiver Brandon Lloyd back on the field. Fox held out Knowshon Moreno and linebacker D.J. Williams, saying they are almost completely healthy and that he planned to play them only in an emergency. Now they prepare to head to Green Bay next."The locker room right now is sick to our stomach," linebacker Wesley Woodyard said. "We let one get away that we know we had a chance to win and that we should have won, so it hurts."Denver shut down Chris Johnson, holding him to 21 yards on 13 carries. Tennessee also lost Kenny Britt, the AFC's leading receiver, in the second quarter. The Broncos couldn't stop Hasselbeck, who threw for 311 yards and two TDs. Hasselbeck took control on the go-ahead drive that started at the Tennessee 5, completing passes to five different receivers, with the longest the pass to Stevens. He also tossed a 14-yard TD to Nate Washington.Titans coach Mike Munchak said not many quarterbacks could've handled losing Britt along with the struggling run game."He came here to win," Munchak said of Hasselbeck. "He didn't come here to retire quietly. He came here to make a difference and win, and he's doing that for us."Britt was hurt with 5:55 left in the second quarter. He had just caught a swing pass from Hasselbeck, eluded a tackler and tried to turn upfield when he fell to the ground and lost the ball.Denver called the Titans dirty a year ago after winning in Nashville. Tennessee racked up a season-high 11 penalties for 80 yards compared to just one for Denver on a facemask Sunday. But Tennessee outgained the Broncos 333-231. Denver but didn't score a point off two fumbles recovered. That included a fumble by Hasselbeck recovered at the Titans 13 late in the third quarter. At the end of that drive, Fox made up his mind to go for it. Derrick Morgan, Tennessee's first-round pick a year ago, stopped McGahee for no gain."If we would have scored, we would have won, no doubt about it," McGahee said. The Titans led 10-7 at halftime before Orton took control of the third quarter with a 16-play drive using up more than eight minutes. He converted four third downs with completions, the last a 5-yarder to McGahee for a TD and a 14-10 lead with 1:17 left in the quarter. Orton was 9 of 10 for 51 yards on the drive.Denver rookie Von Miller sacked Hasselbeck, knocking the ball loose, on the ensuing drive. That gave Denver the ball at the Titans 13 and seemingly all the momentum. Copyright 2011 by STATS LLC and The Associated Press. Keys, Quotes from 1 p.m. ET kickoffsJacksonville Jaguars at Carolina Panthers KEY: After going 13 of 26 for 80 yards through three quarters, rookie quarterback Cam Newton went 5 of 8 for 78 yards in the fourth to lead the Panthers. For Jacksonville, Jones-Drew had six yards on six carries before it started raining, 116 yards on 18 carries afterward. PANTHERS SAID: "It wasn't a pretty win, but the last part counts, right?" - Newton JAGUARS SAID: "We learned that Jaguars equipment manager Drew Hampton cannot be our weatherman. He came up to me before the game and said, 'Coach, there's no chance it's gonna rain.' We'll leave him to the equipment business." - Coach Jack Del RioMiami Dolphins at Cleveland Browns KEY: The Browns were their best on their final drive. RB Montario Hardesty, subbing for ill Peyton Hillis, rushed 14 times for 67 yards. He caught a fourth-down pass on the game-winning drive. BROWNS SAID: "I have confidence in all the guys and they have confidence in me. We just played and forgot about all the balls I missed. We had to overcome a lot." Browns quarterback Colt McCoy DOLPHINS SAID: "We have to play 60 minutes. We had some missed opportunities in all phases of the game." ??? Defensive end Kendall LangfordDenver Broncos at Tennessee Titans KEY: Leading 14-10 with 13:28 left in the game, the Broncos faced 4th-and-goal at the Titans' 1. After sending out Matt Prater for a 19-yard field goal attempt, coach John Fox called timeout and changed his mind, waving the offense on the field. But Willis McGahee's run up the middle was stuffed by Derrick Morgan. BRONCOS SAID: "Well, they all stink. You fight your rear ends off in a game and our guys did. You would like to get the rewards of that." Fox. TITANS SAID: "No, of course not." - RB Chris Johnson asked what his reaction would have been if he had been told before the season that he'd have just 98 yards rushing through three games. New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles KEY: The Giants' short-yardage defense was better than the Eagles' short-yardage offense. The Eagles had to settle for field goals twice when they had the ball inside the Giants' 5-yard line and the Giants also stuffed them on a fourth-and-1 in the fourth quarter when the Eagles were protecting a 16-14 lead. If the Eagles had converted any of those short-yard situations they probably would have won the game. GIANTS SAID: "All I heard all week was 'opportunity, opportunity, opportunity.' If I had a nickel for every time I heard it, I'd be a millionaire." - Wide receiver Victor Cruz EAGLES SAID: "That's on me. ... I didn't do it last week and I should have. I did it this week and I shouldn't have." ??? Coach Andy Reid, on his decision to go for it on fourth-and-1 in the fourth quarter, a move that backfired.Houston Texans at New Orleans Saints KEY: Drew Brees' torrid fourth quarter 13-of-16 for 163 yards and two scores was too much for the Texans, who bogged down in the red zone. Coach Sean Payton's decision to spread the field and put the ball in Brees' hands proved to be golden. TEXANS SAID: "We were down there in the red zone five times today. I think we've been down there more than anybody in football. We are struggling down there. It is a nice problem to have, but obviously we have to get better down there. It goes back to somehow running the ball a little better down there." ??? Texans coach Gary Kubiak SAINTS SAID: "Any time we get a chance to spread the defense out, we can give them a little trouble. We've been here before. We've had to drive the field for a TD or a field goal, and we've got the perfect guy to do that. We're built to play from behind. We don't want to do that, but we've got the parts." ??? Wide receiver Lance Moore, who had nine catches for 88 yards, including a TD and two two-point conversions.San Francisco 49ers at Cincinnati Bengals KEY: For the 25th consecutive game the 49ers did not allow an opposing running back to gain 100 yards against them. Cedric Benson was limited to 64 yards on 17 carries. The Bengals start a rookie quarterback and have an inexperienced group of wide receivers, leading them to rely heavily on the run game. They managed just 79 yards on 20 carries. 49ers SAID: "Cedric runs the ball hard. We said all week that this is the best running team we've faced. They've got great scheme, good players up front ??? big fellas ??? and they run the ball." - DE Justin Smith, defensive end. BENGALS SAID: "We managed to find some room in there to run the ball sometimes but we just have to stick with it. I don't know how things fell apart." - BensonNew England Patriots at Buffalo Bills KEY: Despite yielding 386 yards and four touchdowns, the Bills' secondary picked off Tom Brady four times more interceptions than he'd thrown since a 2006 game vs. Indianapolis. PATRIOTS SAID: "It's not just on Tom. It's everybody getting on the same page and understanding that we're in this together. And we all need to make plays and we're all accountable for it." - Wes Welker on Brady's four picks BILLS SAID: "We're getting closer. Now how do we handle prosperity? That'll be the next step for us. How do you handle prosperity?" - Coach Chan GaileyDetroit Lions at Minnesota Vikings KEY: The Lions playing as dominating a third quarter as a team can play on the road. The Lions netted 50 first-half yards, hadn't scored a point and quarterback Matthew Stafford was clearly rattled by the Vikings' pass rush. So the Lions started going more to the tight end over the middle and using screens to counter the Vikings rush. The result: The Lions scored 10 points, outgained the Vikings 190 yards to six. LIONS SAID: "We got back to what we do best, spreading the ball around, playing fast, gettingup on the line of scrimmage. Guys were making plays for me, that's all I can say." - Stafford VIKINGS SAID: "This won't happen again. This will not happen again, coming in with 13, 14, 20-point leads and coming out in the second half and just giving the game awya. It won't happen again." Developments For Texas A&MSource: Texas A&M's move to SEC can happen if Oklahoma commits to Big 12Developments For Texas A&MThe SEC will have to drop its demand for all nine remaining Big 12 members to waive their rights to sue the conference and Texas A&M if it wants to admit the Aggies for membership immediately -- a step Baylor isn't ready to take, a source said Thursday.Otherwise, if the SEC sticks to its demand, then it won't get at least one member to agree -- namely, Baylor, which won't buckle until it knows what Oklahoma plans to do, a source with direct knowledge of the situation said.Oklahoma, meanwhile, has no timetable for reaching a decision on whether to stay in the Big 12 or pursue a possible move to the Pac-12, according to a source with knowledge of Oklahoma's decision-making process. Last Friday, university president David Boren said the school would evaluate all of its options.Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione isn't against being part of a 16-team conference if that's the direction Boren decides, although it's not seen as ideal, the source said. The source said Oklahoma would not be divided in the process. An Oklahoma decision to remain a part of the Big 12 would offer Baylor more long-term security.A source with knowledge of Baylor's situation said the Bears' first choice is to stay together with the remaining nine Big 12 schools and pursue a 10th for expansion. Meanwhile, Texas and Texas Tech made clear Thursday that each has waived its legal right to sue the SEC and Texas A&M over the Aggies' pending departure, per the SEC's request. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have waived their rights as well.An Oklahoma State official said the school "has no intention of suing the SEC or A&M.""Speculative reports using unnamed sources implying Oklahoma State University would join others in a lawsuit against the SEC and Texas A&M were incorrect," said director of communications Gary Shutt. On the other side, Kansas associate athletic director Jim Marchiony told ESPN that Kansas hasn't waived its rights to sue. Iowa State has not waived it's rights either."We are not aware of any SEC demand directed at Iowa State University," Iowa State spokesman John McCarroll said. Both Kansas State spokesman Kenny Lannou and a Missouri official declined comment Thursday on whether the schools will retain their legal right to sue."If the departure of Texas A&M results in significant changes in the Big 12 membership, several institutions may be severely affected after counting on revenue streams from contracts that were approved unanimously by our members, including Texas A&M," Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe said in a statement Thursday. "In some cases, members reasonably relied on such approval to embark on obligations that will cost millions of dollars."But Baylor, like Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State, isn't sitting idle. Neither is the Big East, which has reached out to the Big 12 schools that could be left behind if the conference were to lose two members (Oklahoma and Oklahoma State) or four (the Oklahoma schools, Texas and Texas Tech), the source said. The Big East would be willing to expand to 12 football-playing members and 20 for men's and women's basketball in order to stave off a potential raid from the SEC (West Virginia), the ACC (Syracuse and Connecticut) or even the Big Ten (Pitt or Rutgers), according to sources. Kansas and Kansas State could also be alternatives for the Pac-12 if it were to decide to expand to 16 without the two Texas schools. At least two Pac-12 sources told ESPN that they weren't in favor of expanding beyond the current 12 members unless Texas were involved. Member presidents of the SEC unanimously voted Tuesday night to accept Texas A&M. Last Friday the SEC received written assurance from the Big 12 that it was free to accept A&M as a member, Florida university president and SEC chairman Dr. Bernie Machen said."We were notified (Tuesday) afternoon that at least one Big 12 institution had withdrawn its previous consent and was considering legal action," Machen said in a statement Wednesday. "The SEC has stated that to consider an institution for membership, there must be no contractual hindrances to its departure."A source close to Texas A&M characterized Baylor as "the ringleader" in the attempt to keep A&M in the Big 12, ESPN's Joe Schad reported."We are being held hostage right now," A&M president R. Bowen Loftin said of being forced to stay in the Big 12. "Essentially, we're being told that you must stay here against your will and we think that really flies in the face of what makes us Americans for example and makes us free people."
ESPN IllustrationPittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison caused a stir this week when an article in Men's Journal magazine revealed several controversial quotes by the four-time Pro Bowl selection. We at Page 2 couldn't help but hearken back to the 1990s, when the words of another Steelers linebacker, Greg Lloyd, were ruffling feathers around the NFL.The similarities between Harrison and Lloyd are uncanny. Both were targeted for fines by the commissioner's office. Both were arguably the most feared player in the league in their prime. Both were extremely intense and unafraid to call out their teammates. Both were incredibly quotable. With that in mind, we present a quiz. See if you can distinguish which of the following quotes are from Harrison and which are from Lloyd. Good luck!1. "When you hit a dude hard, you feel it, too, and the Steelers go at play-to-die speeds. But if, God forbid, I wind up having brain damage, so be it. It is a little bit in flux at this point, but I think we will have some more clarity here shortly."An announcement, Caldwell said, is likely to come soon."I guess everyone's definition of 'awhile' is different," defensive captain Gary Brackett said. "I know things happen in the NFL that can be very strange. You can see guys get better instantly or you can see it go the other way instantly as well. So in this league, I think everyone is day to day and that's how I'm viewing it."Manning will be in street clothes, still recovering from neck surgery, when the team opens the season at Houston on Sunday. Kerry Collins will start in his place."To say I am disappointed in not being able to play is an understatement," Manning said in a release from the team. "The best part about football is being out there on the field playing with my teammates. It will be tough not to be out there playing for the organization and our fans. I simply am not healthy enough to play, and I am doing everything I can to get my health back. The team will do fine without me, and I know for sure that I will miss them much more than they miss me."Manning had neck surgery to repair a nerve May 23, but the recovery has taken much longer than the expected six to eight weeks that would have put him back on the field for the start of training camp. He signed a five-year, $90 million contract in late July, but started camp on the physically unable to perform list and wasn't activated until last Monday. He did limited work at practice last week, which led to complaints about back pain. The team issued a statement saying that team doctors had re-evaluated Manning and instructed him to stop practicing while he undergoes more tests. No additional surgery has been scheduled. On Wednesday night, Irsay debunked rumors that Manning had recently undergone another surgery on his neck.Mike and Mike in the MorningESPN NFL Insider Chris Mortensen says Peyton Manning doesn't even know when he'll be back on the field. Plus, Mortensen says Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees will get bigger contracts than Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. More Podcasts "Peyton didn't have a medical procedure last sunday,we'll have more info 2 add clarity 2 situation soon," he wrote on Twitter.Manning's 208 consecutive regular-season starts are the most among active players. When he officially misses Sunday's game, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber, who has started 179 straight games, would take over the top spot if he starts Sunday against the Detroit Lions.Manning has been the Colts' only starting quarterback for the last 13 years. Over that span, the Chicago Bears have started 17 different quarterbacks, the most of any NFL team. Every team other than the Colts has had at least three different starting quarterbacks during that span. The last quarterback other than Manning to start for Indy was Jim Harbaugh, now the San Francisco 49ers coach. The player who can empathize most with Manning is running back Joseph Addai, who injured a nerve in his left shoulder Oct. 17 against Washington and then missed the next eight games. There were times, Addai recalled, that he would wake up during the night with sudden pain. There were other times that he couldn't hold up a microphone or the ball would drop out of his hands with a slight bump.Addai figured the ensuing bye week would give him enough time to heal, but it took him more than two months to get back into a game and he still didn't feel 100 percent until this season."After awhile it came back, but you don't really know when it's going to come back," Addai said. "It's frustrating."Addai said Manning has asked about the experience, something the two have discussed at length since players reported to camp July 31. Addai said he has not yet caught passes from Manning at full speed and he can't say where Manning's recovery is right now.Instead, he's worried about playing the Texans without Manning."You know how important Peyton is," Addai said. "I think everybody has to step it up."Customized Cowboys Jersey, custom Cowboys Jersey, Cheap Anquan Boldin Jersey, Orleans Saints Jersey, Raiders Jersey Outlet, Reebok Brian Urlacher Jersey, custom New Orleans Saints Jersey, Oakland Raiders Jersey, custom Oakland Raiders Jersey, Jacoby Ford Jersey Outlet, Customized Dallas Cowboys Jersey, Official Dallas Cowboys Jersey, Free Shipping DeMarcus Ware Jersey, Cheap Darren McFadden Jersey, custom Dallas Cowboys Jersey, custom Raiders Jersey, Customized Saints Jersey, Cheap Jacoby Ford Jersey, Cowboys Jersey , NFL Brian Urlacher Jersey, DeMarcus Ware Jersey Free shipping, custom Saints Jersey, Darren McFadden Jersey Outlet, Official DeMarcus Ware Jersey, Customized Oakland Raiders Jersey, Customized Raiders Jersey, Cheap Oakland Raiders Jersey, New Orleans Saints Jersey Outlet, Anquan Boldin Jersey Outlet, Dallas Cowboys Jersey, Brian Urlacher Jersey White, Cheap New Orleans Saints Jersey, Customized New Orleans Saints Jersey
If you're a cheesehead, there are many sound reasons that may lead you to believe that the Green Bay Packers will repeat as Super Bowl champions.First off, repeating is actually a pretty common occurrence in the NFL. The Miami Dolphins did it in the early '70s. The Pittsburgh Steelers accomplished it twice in the mid and late '70s. The San Francisco 49ers pulled it off in the late '80s. The Dallas Cowboys in the early '90s. The Denver Broncos in the late '90s. Brady's New England Patriots achieved it at the turn of the millennium. And guess who won the first two Super Bowls? The Green Bay Packers with a back-to-back number in '67 and '68.Additionally, the Packers have one of the best defenses in the NFL (as you fantasy nuts may know) and at this point, I think everyone is ready to accept that Aaron Rodgers(notes) is an elite, top-five quarterback in the league.Still, I think there are even better reasons to believe that the NFL will not come full circle with a Green Bay Packers victory in 2012.Without further ado, here they are:4. The OddsPart of what makes the Super Bowl such a spectacular feat in sports is the difficulty of the tournament it belongs to. The NFL playoffs, along with March Madness and the World Cup, is one of the hardest competitions to win due to its single elimination format. Therefore, winning the tournament twice in a row almost always requires a level of utter dominance that the Green Bay Packers simply didn't display last year.Sometimes, as was the case with the '06 and '09 Steelers, Super Bowl champions fail to even make the playoffs the season following their title win. This is part of a phenomenon referred to as the "Super Bowl hangover" and is exemplified by the fact that of the last six teams to win it all, only the 2005 Pats won a playoff game the following year.Clearly, none of this directly impacts the 2012 Packers, but it all speaks to how hard repeating actually is.3. Specious Revisionist HistoryAs previously mentioned, the Green Bay Packers weren't as dominant last year as most would make you believe. Part of the reason people feel that way to begin with is that their lasting image of football involves Aaron Rodgers hoisting the Vince Lombardi trophy and showing off his imaginary championship belt.Psychology 101: What comes last resonates. It's called the recency effect. But long-term memory issues aside, the Packers were 8-6 with two weeks to play last season. They lost to bad teams like the Dolphins and Redskins in overtime on back-to-back Sundays and squeaked by the Chicago Bears for a playoff berth after being down 3-0 at halftime.Aside from mauling the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Divisional Round, the Packers beat the Eagles, Bears and Steelers all by one touchdown or less.Given the odds and their less-than-dominant wins, the Green Bay Packers would need the stars to align twice to win the Super Bowl in 2012.2. The Injury BugLast season it was Brad Jones' shoulder, Clay Matthews'(notes) hamstring, Frank Zombo's(notes) knee, Donald Lee's(notes) shoulder, Ryan Pickett's(notes) ankle, Derrick Martin's(notes) ankle, and Jermichael Finley's(notes) hamstring.Aaron Rodger's concussion. This year, already, the Green Bay Packers' ever-expanding injury list has made its return. Finley's ankle is still a concern. Vic So'oto's(notes) is week-to-week because of his back. Both Lawrence Guy(notes) and Shaky Smithson(notes) are out for the season with a concussion and shoulder injury, respectively.Aside from the nasty injury bug plaguing the team, CB Charles Woodson(notes) and LT Chad Clifton(notes), who are said to be aging like wine, both turn 76 next season. What all of this means is that some of the Green Bay Packers' most pivotal players have either suffered injuries recently or are due for a visit from father time. The weathered beard and hourglass make him look like a friendly grandpa figure, but have you ever wondered what he's doing with that scythe?1. The Dream TeamI know, I know: The Packers beat the Philadelphia Eagles twice last season. They edged them out by a touchdown in Week 1 and then barely eliminated Vick's bunch by five in the Wild Card Round. But, all of that was before the Eagles assembled what is being referred to as "The Dream Team."Now many of you will be quick to point out that the Eagles haven't accomplished anything yet, and you'd be right. But you have to admit, the Eagles have put together a potential juggernaut and in theory, should be the best team in the NFL.Philadelphia boasts one of the top defenses in the NFL, a stud in DeSean Jackson(notes), the most electrifying quarterback in NFL history in Michael Vick(notes) and added Nmamdi Asomugha, Ronnie Brown(notes), Cullen Jenkins(notes) and Vince Young(notes).Vast improvement. For these reasons, I don't think the Green Bay Packers will make it out of the NFC.If you're a cheesehead, you might as well consider Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson, Nmamdi Asomugha and Asante Samuel(notes) the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse.Get ready for a Pats-Eagles Super Bowl showdown.More from the Yahoo! Rookies to Keep an Eye on in Packers Vs. Saints Opener
The best way to kick off the 2011 NFL season: a marquee matchup between two teams like the defending Super Bowl champs and the 2009 Super Bowl champs. The Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints will finally start off the feeding frenzy that is the NFL season. This game could have early NFC Championship implications and will surely gauge how prepared the Packers are to defend their crown. It's going to be a great game tonight, especially with the showdown between Packers' Aaron Rodgers(notes) and Saints' Drew Brees(notes). Another exciting aspect of the game will be the rookies that both teams will be fielding and the types of impacts that they'll have. With that in mind, let's take a look at a few of those rookies from each team and what we can expect from them as the 2011 NFL regular season finally comes to fruition. We'll start with some of the Saints' most noteworthy rookies.Mark Ingram(notes), Running BackThe former Heisman Trophy winner could be the difference-maker for the Saints as they head into a season that holds tons of Super Bowl potential for them. Some people weren't impressed with his preseason performance, but I believe that he'll really find his groove once the regular season begins. If he can start to resemble the tremendous runner that he was in college, the Saints' offense could be the deadliest in the NFL in 2011.Cameron Jordan(notes), Defensive EndJordan had his fair share of ups and downs throughout the preseason. After a slow start, he picked up the pace in training camp and proved that he was talented enough for the Saints to bid farewell to veteran defensive end Alex Brown(notes). Whether his early struggles were attributed to a lack of readiness or a poor scheme fit, he's going to have to adjust and adapt. It'll be interesting to see whether or not Jordan can mature enough in 2011 to earn his first-round selection.Johnny Patrick(notes), CornerbackThroughout the NFL Draft process, I was a huge advocate of Patrick and his abilities as a well-rounded cornerback talent. Whether he's in coverage or stepping up to play the run, Patrick has the talent to get the job done. Unfortunately, he's buried on a cornerback depth chart saturated with skill. Considering the fact that he's third on the depth chart at right cornerback, it's unlikely that he'll see the field against the Packers. If he does, though, he'll find a way to make you remember his name. And now, I'll turn my attention to some of the Packers' rookies that could make an impact out on the field tonight.Randall Cobb(notes), Wide ReceiverThis guy is lightning in a bottle. When the ball is in his hands, good things are bound to happen. That is the exact reason why I expect the Packers to do everything they can to get Cobb touches. Although he's lower down on the wide receiver depth chart, Cobb is penciled in as the starting kick returner and punt returner. He struggled with injuries during the preseason, but has come back with confidence and will do everything in his power to make an impact tonight.Derek Sherrod(notes), GuardWhen you're a first-round draft pick, a lot is expected of you. That's the exact situation that Sherrod is in right now. After a preseason in which he struggled more than he succeeded, he'll have his work cut out for him in proving that he was worth the price of admission. Although he isn't starting, he should have several opportunities to make his presence felt tonight against the Saints. We'll see whether or not he's ready to handle the challenge.Alex Green(notes), Running BackDuring the preseason, Green was anything but impressive as a running back. He struggled to read his blocks and looked apprehensive when taking on defenders. The one aspect of his game that makes him an intriguing prospect in tonight's matchup with the Saints is his abilities as a returner. Much like Cobb, he makes sparks fly when he's in the open field. He might get a chance to take handoffs, but I think Ryan Grant(notes) and James Starks(notes) might have other plans.Gil Alcaraz IV has been a diehard NFL fan since the age of nine. TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)For the first time since Arizona's 2008 Super Bowlseason, head coach Ken Whisenhunt won't be the Cardinals' primary play caller. He has relinquished those duties to Mike Miller, promoted in February tooffensive coordinator after two seasons as the team's passing game coordinator. The team has not had anyone with the title offensive coordinator since ToddHaley left to become head coach at Kansas City after that stunning 2008campaign. "Mike and I have worked together for a long time," Whisenhunt said afterthe Cardinals practiced on Thursday. "It's a lot easier when you have the samebeliefs in how you're going to do things."When Miller makes his regular season debut in his new job Sunday againstCarolina, he will be in the coaches' booth high above the field at University ofPhoenix Stadium. He prefers that to calling plays from the sideline."I just think it's a more sterile environment up there," Miller said."There's a little hysteria down on that sideline. I like having my sheetsspread out. I like being able to focus and look and be able to see a fastercoverage or a blitz show to me up there. I just don't have people in my way."Whisenhunt gave Miller some limited play-calling chores last season."He's always been good with that," Miller said. "He looks to always giveguys opportunities on his staff. But even when he was the guy calling the plays,he's been really good at taking input from all of us, and I'd like to think I'ddo the same."The 41-year-old coach said fans shouldn't notice much difference in theteam's offensive concepts."I like to think we're attacking, at the same time we try to be smart," hesaid. "A long time ago, Dan Radakovicha coach that I was with at RobertMorris who coached a long time in the NFLalways said, `Find out who your best11 are, what do they do best, and that's what you do.' I think that's the way`Whis' is and the rest of the staff."After two years as a graduate assistant at Robert Morris, Miller was qualitycontrol coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1999 to 2003. He spent twoseasons coaching tight ends for the Buffalo Bills, then in 2006 went to Germanyas quarterbacks and receivers coach for the Berlin Thunder of the NFL Europe. Hereturned for the 2006 collegiate season as the defensive line coach at RobertMorris. When Whisenhunt, then the Steelers' offensive coordinator, became head coachof the Cardinals in 2007, Miller was not his first choice as wide receiverscoach. But the man Whisenhunt had hired was arrested on a charge of soliciting aprostitute, and Miller lobbied for the job."I remember the day Mike came into my office and made a case to be thereceiver coach after we had the incident early and we had to make a move at thatposition," Whisenhunt said. "He's worked very hard from when he was an internat Pittsburgh to where he is now, and I have great respect for that."As receivers coach in 2007 and 2008, Miller helped Larry Fitzgerald(notes) hone histalents to become one of the NFL's best. Fitzgerald is Miller's most steadfastadvocates."He's one of the most intelligent people that I know, not only on the football field but off," Fitzgerald said. "He comes up with new, innovativeconcepts all the time. My goal, honestly, as a friend of his is to see himbe a head coach one day. I know if we play well, he's going to get hisopportunity, and that is something that would really make me happy."
Peyton Manning: Out 2-3 Months Atfter Neck Surgery
Update:Manning had cervical fusion surgery Thursday with a two-to-three month minimum recovery, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports.Recommendation:No word whether he'll be placed on IR, but it sounds very unlikely that Manning will play again this season, and at first glance, this surgery sounds career-threatening.
Sidney Rice: (Shoulder) Won't Practice before Friday
Update:Rice (shoulder) won't practice until Friday at the earliest, the Seattle Times reports.Recommendation:If Rice can't play Sunday against the 49ers, Ben Obomanu(notes) would start in his place opposite Mike Williams, with Golden Tate(notes) and Doug Baldwin(notes) working out of the slot.
Kerry Collins: Indy No Longer Peyton's Place
Update:With reports that Peyton Manning(notes) had surgery that will require at least a two-to-three month recovery period, Collins' role as the Colts' starting QB seems entrenched.Recommendation:As capable as Collins is, we'd expect the Colts to streamline their passing attack out of the gate, which limits the veteran QB's short-term upside. Still, the Colts have to throw some and Collins has a strong arm, so now that he's locked in as the starter indefinitely, he possesses some fantasy value. They key is to temper expectations by not expecting him to come close to replicating Manning's numbers.Official NFL Shop, Reebok New York Giants Jersey, Official MLB Store, Official Kansas City Chiefs Jersey, Sports Jerseys, Packers Jerseys, Reebok Kansas City Chiefs Jersey, Chiefs Jersey, Giants Jersey, Packers Jersey, Cheap Packers Jerseys, Authentic New York Giants Jersey, Colts Stitched Jersey, Indianapolis Colts Jersey, Colts Jersey, Authentic NBA shop, Official Indianapolis Colts Jersey, Official New York Giants Jersey, Kansas City Chiefs Jersey, NFL Packers Jerseys
